This review is mostly about Dune: Part 2. But to add both parts to the Great Movies List, the title contains them both.

Enjoy 🙂

Dune 1 was exciting and really entertaining, but it was pretty much just the beginning. It was like a glimpse of the world we would be a part of in the upcoming parts. It leaves you wanting so much more. I have been waiting for this for a long time. In fact, I had stopped myself from watching Dune Part 1 just so that I could watch it with this one. I am not at all disappointed.

Denis Villeneuve is a director I admire and has the ability to pull off great things. Dune is a difficult movie to make especially when there is so much going on. And Denis surely deserves appreciation for the work he has put into this. Dune is a sci-fi movie that not only creates but immerses the audience into its own world. That is because of how much believable it is. We all know that the sand worms are not real, but the fear the people have about them and the constant reminder they give us about them makes us a part of the world they are living. The next time I go to a desert there is no fucking way I won’t think about sand worms. Another such thing is the Fremen thumper, the amount of times it is used makes it like an everyday thing for us. And that is a special thing this movie does. This world it creates, it makes you a part of it. We are never really introduced formally to anyone. But still we know what each group of people believe in and what exactly they want.

And it is for sure to be watched on the big screen. In fact, when I watched the first one at home, I regretted not watching it in the theatre. There was no way I was going to miss the chance to watch this one. The enormity of the world is constantly reminded by the amount of people we see on the screen. There is a scene where Paul is moving through a large group of people where everyone looks like tiny ants. The wide shots in the movie are gorgeous. The scene where Paul rides a sandworm is so beautiful. I could list a number of strikingly gorgeous scenes. The war scenes……literally wow! Shooting a war scene has always been tough. The power, the knife slashing against the suits, and the sand splashing in the wind, the fire, have been shown so beautifully that it makes it worth it to watch it in the theatres. Something that makes the fights scenes really enjoyable is because the music drops and it all comes down to just the metal slashing metal, the blade piercing and the grunts of the fighters. That gives some realness to it. Do I even have to mention the soundtrack? It’s Hans Zimmer. Hans Zimmer has reached the status that his name itself is enough to trust that the soundtrack is going to be phenomenal. That is really something!

The actors surely play a big role in this one. The cast fits perfectly and there are so many big actors. What I like is these great actors are not wasted. Each one of them gets their moment on the screen. Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Stellan Skarsgard and even Dave Bautista-they are just really well-based and at times breathtaking. I need to take care I give no spoilers, but the character shift of Timothee and Rebecca Ferguson’s character after drinking a liquid in the movie was really mesmerizing (You’ll get this after watching the film). I would not be writing on Part 1 separately so I need to mention it- Oscar Isaac portrays a really great figure as a dad for the Dune series.

The film is a little slow at times but still entertaining. Does that make sense? There are scenes in the first half where nothing much is happening, but these scenes are consumed to make the viewers understand what each character is thinking and his motive behind what he/ she is doing.

Surprisingly, I did not think the romantic part between Paul and Chani was forced. When I watch movies that aren’t romantic, I don’t like it when they add a romantic subplot. But their romance was natural. It is believable that it just happened, especially because the mystery it had created because of the dreams Paul always had about Chani. And this makes their love, not a weight that needs to be carried just for the sake of, but a nice part of it. I don’t know if it was intentional, but there were some unexpected funny moments in the film. Especially when things were supposed to be serious, they decided to give a tinge of laughter to the scene. And that was not bad per se. Just unusual.

A small thing that bugs me is- why are there so many unanswered questions? They gave some good twists to the movie, but absolutely no further explanation. There was a moment in the movie where I was like – ‘Damn, that was a big one’. And after the movie ends, they leave it completely hanging. I just can’t wait for the third one. In fact, I wouldn’t have minded if they immediately started it after part 2. But perhaps, as it always has been- ‘we always gotta wait for the good things’.
