My Sassy Girl

Absolutely unbelievable! I just cannot believe how good this movie is. A rom-com this well thought? It is really hard to find.

On a usual day, if I am going to watch a movie, I would have decided which one in the morning itself. And this wasn’t the one in the plan. Last moment, I decided to watch this one from my watchlist and I am in complete awe now that I have finished watching it.

Gyeon-woo is an engineering student who is smart (as we have been told) but doesn’t study. One day, while returning after having some drinks with his friends, he sees a girl that is his perfect ‘type’. But she is drunk and that kinda repulses him. As she stands on the edge of the platform, he saves her from getting hit by the train. It is not long before, she pukes on a passenger in the train and calls Gyeon-woo ‘honey’, making everyone believe that he is her boyfriend and compelling him to take care of her in the train. From that moment onwards, she just never seems to leave him alone and even leads him from one problem to another. Somehow very innocently but willingly he gets bullied into hanging out with her. I mean who would mind hanging out with her. She (Jin ji-Hyun) is gorgeous. She just doesn’t act pretty (as the movie says).

When you read this, it feels to be a teen rom-com. But take my word for it, it is much more than that. Romcoms have been absolute cliches nowadays. There is no thought put into the plot and the innocence somehow feels lost in them. Love is delicate. If it is not carefully cared about, it is not felt. ‘My Sassy Girl’ is a romantic comedy. But unlike the others in the genre, it handles the romantic part of it and that too so well.

The movie has some really great storytelling and some surprisingly good techniques with the camera which are rare to see in a movie of this type. You can see the efforts put to make the movie as fun as it is. The way the movie quickly shows the stories written by the girl( I am referring to Jun Ji-Hyun as ‘the girl’ because her name is never mentioned in the film), the scenes where he is bullied by her and even the quick scene jumps from one to another.

Both the main actors fit perfectly into their characters. It is not completely new to have a strong personality girl with a timid boy. But the chemistry in this movie is what makes it so fun to watch. They both seem to be simple at surface level but as we go through the movie they start becoming complex(as all humans in reality are). That turns out to be one of the most realistic and even heart touching things the film delivers. There are scenes which are a little silly or that show that it is a 2001 movie. But those are really negligible and you won’t even remember they existed when you reach till the end.

When the movie was near the end, I don’t know if it was intentional, but somehow, I got misdirected (in a good sense). Multiple times I was like- ‘Ah shit, they are going in the wrong direction’. You know that feeling where you are hoping that it is all worthwhile and the movie does not fuck up? In the end, it is freaking perfect! And it is unbelievable how everything just connects in a click. Throughout the film, I was laughing often at how things are happening and all of a sudden it takes a turn towards a more complex tone. But it is not a jerk. You are smoothly transitioned into it. That is not easy. It is very important that the movie knows what it wants its audience to feel. And this one knows for sure. It is cute, exciting, heartfelt, at times touching but most of all fun.

It is just that, in a bigger picture I did not expect this to be a movie that would change my perspective. About love or even how I looked at people. When the credits started rolling, I just kept smiling (got a little happy tears), thinking about how it started and how it absorbed us to deliver that perfect end. Wouldn’t change a thing.

It is going to be one of my favourite romantic movies. I don’t know how else to say this but if this is not a great romantic movie then I don’t what is! (Yes, that is a big statement)
